Goodbye November! Thanksgiving & City Dog Parks

Oops, somehow November crept past me without many blog updates!  We had a nice, quiet Thanksgiving just the two of us (and Bailey).  Somehow I didn't take a single picture of the day, which is very unlike me. We had our classic herb roasted turkey, mom's oyster casserole recipe, stuffing, potatoes, and homemade gravy.  And of course I made two of our favorites with all of the leftovers: Best Ever Turkey Noodle Soup and Pioneer Woman's "Turkey" Pot pie.  Yum.

I don't know if you remember Marietta, but our friend Jess's sister adopted her, so we met up with Jess and Mar at a local dog park.  Bailey was weird the whole time, and didn't run around like a crazy dog and lead all the other dogs on the Basenji 500 like she usually does. She didn't even go sit behind the bench when she was tired, and she kept hanging out with an Asian couple, I guess she thought they were her parents?  I think she was so weird because there wasn't any grass at the park, so she didn't have as much traction to run all around.  Ahhhh, gotta love city dog parks, right?

Being weird all by herself

Mar and her new friend being lazy

Getting to know each other, as dogs do (LOVED the little puppy! He was so cute!)

Weekend Favorites: List style

My favorite things about this weekend/week:
  • I had 3 day weekend (have I mentioned how much I love my new schedule)?  Also, I was "back-up" on Saturday but I didn't get called into work....double bonus!
  • There was a "Weekend Preview" of Hallmark Countdown to Christmas (=cheesy Christmas movies!!)  It "officially" starts this Friday, November 9th (and I may or may not have it listed on my calendar on my phone).  Okay, I do.
  • My favorite holiday happened this weekend...okay, so Daylight Saving Time isn't a "holiday" per se. I still like to celebrate getting an extra hour of sleep!
  • I went downtown to meet a friend who just had a baby. My friend looks amazing and her baby is adorable!

C was kind of bored with the convo
  • Free trip to the Art Institute of Chicago (above mentioned friend has an annual pass)

  • I now consider myself an expert parallel parker. It's one thing to parallel park downtown Chicago, but when you have to weave in and out of the supports of the El tracks, it adds a whole new dimension.
  • Jess's Birthday dinner at the King Crab Tavern. Mmmmmm seafood!  Happy Birthday Jess!!

  • Bailey enjoyed handing out candy with her friend Izzy (french bulldog) on Halloween.  Okay, so maybe they didn't "hand out candy" as much as they tried to pounce on each other in the small front area of our building while trick-or-treaters tried to dodge them and asked for candy from every single person sitting out there (regardless of if we were holding a candy bowl or if we were empty handed)
All the pics I have of B and Izzy are a complete blur. Those two do not stand still long enough to get a good pic!
  • Halloween while working at a children's hospital = so much fun!  My coworkers dressed up again too! This time a little bit more appropriate than their "party costumes."
Can you believe my friend Colleen made these?!  I'm so impressed with her sewing skills!
  • Bailey has been a bugger ALL. WEEKEND. LONG.  This. Every time you sat down.  I think all she wants is to be invited up on the couch. Man is she persistant.

  • Since it's November and we live in Chicago, I decided today I should probably bring my basil plant inside. But then I remembered that it is practically a small tree and I didn't want that giant thing in my house! Luckily, a small little part decided to branch off and grow it's own roots so I repotted that and brought it in to the kitchen window sill.  The remainder of the plant got clipped off and will be brought into work.  Everyone loves free basil! (Well, at least all of my coworkers seem to enjoy it)!
Look at the size of that "trunk"!

Second City and Halloween Festivities

Last weekend we went with our neighbors, Scott and Marybell (the newlyweds! Wooo!) to Second City. Yes, it's the THIRD time we've been to Second City since May!  What can I say, Tom really likes it :)  Even though it's been the same show all three times, I enjoyed this show more than the one we saw in July. All but 2 of the cast were new so it made it a little bit different (although the first one was still my fav)!  After the show we went to nearby O'Donovan's (one of the oldest bars in Chicago!) for some late night grub and drinks.  It was so cozy and decked out for Halloween!

This past weekend a friend from work had a Halloween Party so we decided to rock out 80's style and join the fun.  There were plenty of amusing Halloween costumes, including a guy dressed up as "Dog the Bounty Hunter" (or so I thought). Later I realized that this was just how this guy looked/dressed, and apparently he caused some embarrassment last year when people asked him about his "costume."  My manager dressed up as a boob, and my friend Bridget's boyfriend added a frog to his mascot costume collection.  The decor was spooky and creative and the food was great!

Garden Update: Final Harvest and Fall!

Wow, summer went by fast!  Our crazy tomato plants decided to take their sweet time producing tomatoes. I've harvested quite a few during September, but not much before that. And Oregano managed to die on it's own somehow. It might have had something to do with the doritos, graham crackers, or french fries that were stored in it by the squirrels.

We've been busy harvesting the last of the tomatoes and peppers and re-theming the balcony for fall. I *big puffy heart* my mums, but I think the cold is starting to get to them already :/  We had to turn on our heat for the first time today!

I've been wanting to make homemade salsa all summer and finally got the chance this weekend.  I had a few bell peppers too, so I harvested all of my red tomatoes, a few of Tom's serrano peppers, the last of my cilantro, and based the recipe roughly off of this recipe (except I added some balsalmic vinegar...yum!) It is so good!

I had quite a few green tomatoes leftover as well, so thankfully good ol' Google came up with something for me to use them for.  I found this recipe and thought it sounded delish.  I was a little skeptical, because I still don't own a kitchen scale (I know, for all the cooking I do, I really should...but good cooks really just guesstimate, right?!?) and all of the ingredient requirements were listed in pounds.  It came out okay, but I liked the roasted salsa (with the red tomatoes) better. I'm not complaining though because at least it put all of my green tomatoes to good use!

Freezer Cooking Extravaganza

After our vacation a couple of weeks ago I decided to take a few extra days off and catch up on some things around the apartment. It's been forever since I've done any freezer cooking (or nightly dinner cooking for that matter) so I gathered our favorite recipes, did a little grocery shopping, and cooked like a madwoman for like 2 days straight (or 3).
Bailey was trying to "help."  Or maybe block me from cooking so I could pay attention to her!
I'm happy to report our freezer is stocked with the following delicious meals

Lake Ripley: Believe it or Not!!

Last week Tom and I went on vacation to Lake Ripley in Southern Wisconsin.  Yes, we went on "summer vacation" in September.  I love the fall, so we thought we would go beginning-mid September to get warm enough days but nice chilly fall mornings and nights. It turns out our timing could not have been more perfect.

The house we rented was really, really nice and it was literally right on the lake. I loved being able to lie on the couch in the living room and gaze out at the lake (and watch our 3 duck friends float by as they came to say hi every morning and evening).  There was a really cute screened in gazebo that we had coffee in the first two mornings and dinner in the second night....until we saw the biggest, scariest looking spider either of us had ever seen in our lives and then we didn't set foot in the gazebo the whole rest of the time.  One thing is clear from our vacations, when we eventually buy a house someday, we need to have some full glass sliding doors for Bailey to look out from. She did this at the Pine Chalet in February and enjoyed watching the chipmunks and squirrels run through the yard here.

Bailey loved swimming in the lake and then running up and down the dock and doing the Basenji 500 in our yard and both of the adjacent neighbors.  She was playing her game (that she has mastered) where she pretends to be deaf when we call her name.  So she earned herself a spot on the leash every time she went in the lake so she didn't disturb the neighbors and a "barricade" was put up when we were out on the dock so she couldn't run back into the yard.  She also learned how to doggy paddle without inhaling the lake at the same time, so that's an improvement from last year. We spent a lot of time at the end of the dock, reading (me and Tom), playing guitar (Tom), eating a rawhide (Bailey), staring at the neighbor's cat (Bailey), and just enjoying the view (all of us).

Saturday morning we went to a local orchard to get some fresh apples.  I walked in and the place was practically empty....the lady said they had a really hard time this year. I felt bad :/  But they did have a few bags that didn't make the "first or second cut" on the table for clearance. They looked good to me, so I walked out with a 10 pound bag of apples for $3!!! I see baking in our future......

The other thing I loved about the house was that you could see the sunset every night.  I forgot that the sun would be setting a little bit earlier in September, but we still had plenty of daylight. And I loooooved watching the stars at the end of the dock at night (except I watch too many Ivestigation Discovery shows and was paranoid someone was going to break into the house while we were out on the dock)!  We had a perfect view of the Big Dipper and even saw a shooting star or two.

And, somehow Bailey sleeping in bed with us on vacation has become a tradition, because she didn't hesitate to jump right up on the bed every single night (at home she has never slept in the bed with us).  She was a tired pup.  The last night she even tried to herd us up the stairs....twice. She would circle around the living room looking at us, then walk up the stairs, I guess hoping we would follow.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Yep. I made homemade laundry detergent.  I had been wanting to make some for a while, but I was too nervous about how it would turn out.  I got kind of sick of trying to always find a coupon or deal for store bought laundry detergent, so I decided when my massive supply of Tide ran out, I would try my hand at making some detergent.

I had bookmarked The Simple Dollar's post about this years ago, because it's always been something that has intrigued me. Not only is it less waste for the environment, it's a TON cheaper!  I pretty much just followed Trent's step-by-step instructions, except I couldn't find any Washing Soda (well, they didn't have it at Target), so I made my own following this tutorial.

All in all it came out really well!  I was a little nervous at first, because it never seemed very "soapy" when I would put it in the washing machine, but everything has come out clean and smelling fresh. I do think I will use two bars of soap instead of one next time. The only down side to homemade detergent (if you want to call it a downside) is that we seem to go through it very quickly.  We use about 1 cup per load (which is recommended) but when comparing it to regular detergent, we empty the bottle a lot faster!

Updates: List Style! Casinos, Marietta, EI, & Bails

Because by now you absolutely know how much I love making lists...
  • Last weekend I got a surprise phone call from my friend Paige who was in town for the day to visit her husband who was here doing business.  Wes was in meetings all day, so Paige and I met up for lunch and caught up.  After lunch, we had some time to kill, so what better way to enjoy a hot summer afternoon than inside a Casino?!  I can't even remember the last time I was in a casino (Las Vegas? AC?) but I knew I wanted to head right toward the nickel slots!!  Paige tried her hand at some Blackjack, and actually won $40 (at one point).  I don't think my math skills are sharp enough to play casino blackjack!!

  • We've been meaning to have our friend Jess over all summer, so she was finally able to come over and chill with us last Saturday night.  We grilled out and enjoyed the cooler weather on the back deck.  Bailey loved having the extra attention! And we got to hear updates on Marietta, since Jess' sister is now fostering her (and hopefully adopting her)!!
  • I am almost finished applying for my Early Inter.vention licensure for the state of Illinois.  I had to take an 9 hour online course which I completed a few weeks ago. This past Friday I drove an hour away to sit in an all-day course which basically reiterated everything that was in the online course.  And oh, I should mention that it took me an hour and 45 minutes to get home.  Ugh! All I have to do now is get fingerprinted (to make sure I'm not a criminal) and send in the application. It's going to feel so good to get this checked off of my To Do List!!
  • And because "the people" have been requesting pics of Bailey, I'll leave you with this. You have to give the people what they want, right?!

P.S. In TWELVE days I can start burning my Pumpkin Spice Candles!!!  Hooray for FALL!!!!
